Compare

autoMessage vs Photon

Photon is the most technically credible company on this list and the comparison is the most honest one we make. They raised $4.5M from Gradient and A* with Vercel participating, and their open-source Spectrum SDK does something real: an MIT-licensed TypeScript framework that reads the macOS Messages database on your own Mac, free, with no account required. If you are a TypeScript developer building an agent product, Spectrum is a genuinely good choice and we will not pretend otherwise. The question this page answers is narrower: what you get for $59 that free does not include.

Where Photon shines

  • The open-source Spectrum SDK is free, MIT licensed, and runs on your own Mac under your own iCloud account — the same architecture we use
  • Well funded and moving fast, with roughly 365,000 npm downloads a month
  • One framework across iMessage, WhatsApp, Telegram, SMS/RCS, email and voice
  • A real free tier, so a developer can start with no spend at all

Where Photon falls short

  • The free self-host mode is a library, not a service — there is no hosted API endpoint, no dashboard, no webhook delivery, no auth layer and no billing. You write TypeScript and operate it yourself
  • Local mode is feature-limited by their own documentation: reactions, threaded replies, edits, unsend, read receipts, effects, group creation and membership operations are unavailable
  • The cheap tiers ($0 and $25) use shared numbers from their pool, not your Apple ID — for sender identity that is weaker than a dedicated line, not stronger
  • A dedicated number costs $250/line/month, more than four times autoMessage and more than Sendblue

Who each tool is best for

Photon: TypeScript developers building an agent product who want a framework to build on and are happy to run the infrastructure themselves.

autoMessage: Developers, indie founders, real estate agents, recruiters, and any team that wants AI-native iMessage automation at $59/mo without handing their account to a vendor.

Choose Photon if…

You are a developer, you want to own the stack end to end, and writing and hosting the service layer yourself is the part of the job you actually want to do. Or you need WhatsApp, Telegram and voice in the same framework.

Choose autoMessage if…

You want the thing finished. autoMessage is a signed, notarized Mac app plus a hosted REST API, a hosted MCP server, webhooks, a dashboard, billing and support — on your own Apple ID, for $59/month. With Photon you either pay $250/line for a number that stays theirs, or you self-host free and build the hosted layer yourself. We are the middle option: managed infrastructure on an account you own. That is the whole product.
